When I first moved to DC in 1999, wine bars were not part of the young professional bar circuit. We were all too poor to afford good wine, much less find it with the sparse collection of wine bars in the area. Twelve years later, I'm amazed by the level of wine interest in our lovely Capitol, and I continue to stay true to the faves I've gotten to know all too well.
In celebration of the first ever DC Wine Week, I'm recommending my top fave wine bars in DC - Sonoma, Proof, Cork, Vinoteca and Veritas. I also am a huge fan of the wine list at Charlie Palmers because they have solid wines and are the first in DC to offer eWineBook, an electronic wine list that allows patrons to review their wine selections.
Of course, my personal fave is Bourbon Steak because their Sommelier, my friend Julian Mayor, is a master at finding outstanding wines that are often times, incredibly affordable. Each visit with Julian prompts me to search for his recommendations via my other fave wine guy's (the one and only Gary Vaynerchuk aka @garyvee) store, Wine Library.
So, in celebration of DC Wine Week - October 15-22 - I encourage you to venture out to these wine havens and enjoy tasting what DC has to offer. You won't be disappointed!
