In the spirit of the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. tomorrow morning, I wanted to share this special wine my fiancé, Captain Lee Zawacki, introduced me to earlier this year: Jarhead, Wines of Character. Founded by two Marines--Captain Adam Firestone and Sergeant Ruben Dominguez--their mission is to give back while honoring the men and women who defend our country. Each bottle of Jarhead Red supports the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, which provides educational assistance to children of U.S. Marines, with special consideration to families of fallen Marines.

2010 Jarhead Red (California) boats a robust character with rich black fruit flavors and a finish that doesn’t quit.

Tasting Notes From the Winery:
The 2010 Jarhead Red opens with generous aromas of black cherry, plum, cedar and spice. Round, juicy flavors of cherry, raspberry and cinnamon unfold along a rich texture. Hints of coffee join supple tannins on a long, balanced finish. This boldly flavoured wine is a perfect match for classic American fare, such as peppered steak, barbecued chicken and grilled sausage.

2010 Jarhead Reserve (Santa Ynez Valley) opens with warm plum, cassis and cherry aromas with notes of cola, caramel and mint.

Tasting Notes From the Winery:
The grapes were hand harvested on November 9 after an extended growing season. After gentle destemming, the must was cold soaked for five days prior to fermentation for a smooth extraction of color, aroma and flavor. At the peak of fermentation, regular pumpovers were employed for added extraction and judicious aeration. This aeration softened the Cabernet Franc’s naturally robust tannin profile. The wine was aged for 18 months in premium French oak barrels, of which 35 percent featured new oak. The inclusion of Petit Verdot in the final blend brought added color, complexity and dimension to the wine.

2012 Jarhead Chard (Santa Barbara County) showcases their lighter side with crisp flavors of tropical fruit and citrus.

Tasting Notes From the Winery:
Our 2012 Jarhead Chard opens with bright aromas of peach, lemon zest and tropical fruit. The palate unfolds with rounded flavors of pear and citrus with hints of vanilla. A cool mineral quality joins crisp acidity on a smooth, balanced finish. This luscious Chardonnay is a fine match for shrimp scampi, roast lemon chicken and creamy pastas.

You can purchase Jarhead wines directly from their website or locate a distributor in your area. Jarhead wine company also invites you to join their wine club (for exclusive discounts) and to send a bottle to your special Marine!

“While Jarhead Red is made by Marines, for Marines, it will appeal to anyone who enjoys a robust red wine crafted in an approachable style. Semper fi.”
